Hannah Witty's 3 boys
My 3 beautiful boys!

When life gets busy, it’s easy to forget the bigger picture

Every summer I tell myself things will be a little calmer… we will make that bucket list and tick everything off, boat trip, camping, movie night, make rock cakes – their favourite! Then before you know it, they’re back at school!

Between keeping three boys entertained, trying to enjoy family time, a holiday, juggling work and attempting to remember who’s meant to be where and when, life can feel wonderfully chaotic.

I do like to imagine that I look like the elegant swan gliding effortlessly across the water/life! The reality? Under the surface, I’m paddling as fast as I can!

It’s probably a feeling many of us can relate to. When life is that busy, it’s easy to focus on getting through today and forget about tomorrow. That’s one of the reasons I like National Financial Awareness Day – it gives us permission to pause for a moment and think about where we’re heading, not just where we’re rushing to.

So, with that in mind…

What are you actually working towards?

When was the last time you stopped and asked yourself: What am I actually working towards?

Not just the next deadline, the next school holiday, the next household bill or the next thing on the never-ending to-do list – but the bigger picture. What does a life you’re excited about actually look like?

The reality is that most of us are incredibly busy. We’re juggling work, family, carers responsibilities, commitments and everything that comes with modern everyday life. It’s very easy to focus on what needs paying today and forget to think about what we want our money to make possible tomorrow.

That’s the purpose of National Financial Awareness Day, held each year on 14 August. It’s a reminder to take a moment to think about our financial wellbeing and whether our money is helping us live the life we want.

Financial planning is about more than money

Financial planning is often misunderstood as something only needed when you’re approaching retirement or making major life decisions. But actually, it’s about so much more than that.

It’s about asking questions like:

  • What experiences do I want to enjoy?
  • What memories do I want to create?
  • What matters most to me and my family?
  • What would make life feel more rewarding?

Maybe it’s having the freedom to book that dream holiday, renovate your home, support your children, feel more in control of your finances, or simply have the confidence to make the most of what you’ve worked hard for.

The best financial plans aren’t built around money alone – they’re built around people, priorities and the life they want to create.

Small steps can make a big difference

And you don’t need to have everything figured out today. Small, consistent steps can have a big impact over time. Saving regularly, reviewing your spending, investing what you can afford can all help turn future goals into something much more achievable.

At Robson Laidler Wealth, we believe financial planning should be about helping you live the life you want  – both now and in the years ahead. Whether you’re planning your next adventure, thinking about your family’s future, or simply looking for greater financial confidence, having a plan can make all the difference.
